Abstract

The invention comprises esters of the formula <FORM:0834575/IV (b)/1> wherein #f represents an ortho- or para-phenylene group or a group -Z-CR1R11- (Z being a C1-7 alkylene group and R1 and R11 representing hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl groups), n is 1 or 2, R represents hydrogen or an alkyl, alkenyl, benzyl or cyclohexyl group and R0 represents a monovalent or divalent residue of an ester-forming hydroxy compound when n is 1 or 2 respectively. R0 may represent an alkyl, alkenyl, chloroalkyl, nitroalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, aryloxyalkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl, chloroaryl, nitroaryl, alkylene, polyglycol or polythioglycol residue. The compounds are prepared by reacting, in the presence of a hydrogen halide acceptor, a compound of the formula CH2=CH-S-#f-NHR with a halocarbonate of the formula XCOOR0 or XCOO-R0-OOCX, where X is chlorine or bromine. The compounds may be used to form homopolymers or copolymers. Compounds in which R is hydrogen yield the corresponding isocyanates when heated in presence of a base. Compounds of the formula CH2=CH-S-#f-NHR are prepared by reacting aminomercaptans of the formula HS-#f-NHR, or an aminoalkylisothiuronium salt of the formula <FORM:0834575/IV (b)/2> (where Y is an anion), with acetylene under pressure in the presence of a basic catalyst. Aminoalkylisothiuronium salts of the above general formula are obtained by heating compounds having the formula <FORM:0834575/IV (b)/3> with thiourea in an alcohol solvent.ALSO:Vinylthiocarbamates of the formula <FORM:0834575/IV (a)/1> wherein #f represents an ortho- or para-phenylene group or a group -Z-CR1R11- (Z being a C1-7 alkylene group and R1 and R11 representing hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl groups), n is 1 or 2, R represents hydrogen or an alkyl, alkenyl, benzyl or cyclohexyl group and R DEG represents a monovalent or divalent residue of an esterforming hydroxy compound when n is 1 or 2 respectively, are homopolymerized or are copolymerized with vinyl or acrylic co-monomers, such as methyl methacrylate, in the presence of benzoyl peroxide or a azo-type free radical polymerization catalyst, such as dimethyl azoisobutyrate. The polymers may be prepared in the form of gels or cast into sheets. They serve as adhesives for glass, as modifiers for alkyd resins and as textile finishing agents. The monomers of the above general formula may be used as plasticizers and stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride or vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers.
