Abstract

1519284 Electrolytic production of In NOVOSIBIR OLOVYAN KOMBINAT 4 March 1977 09279/77 Heading C7B In is extracted from a Pb-Sn alloy using (a) a mixture of Zn and Pb chlorides and a S-containing reagent in an amount of 0À1 to 5 pts by wt S to 1 pt of In at 300‹ to 380‹C, (b) separating the resulting In-containing slag from the alloy, (c) leaching the slag with an aqueous acid solution, (d) separating the acidic In containing solution from the solid Pb cake, (e) recovering In sponge by deposition on Zn plates immersed in the acid solution of (d) separating the metallic In sponge and precipitating Zn(OH) 2 from the remaining solution, (e) electrolytically refining remelted In from (d) in a melt of Zn and In chloride in the presence of 3 to 10 wt. per cent NH 4 Cl (f) electrolytically refining the In from (e) in an aqueous solution which is continuously recycled through a sorbent and (g) recycling the Pb cake and the Zn(OH)2 to step (a). Suitable S-containing compounds are S, (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , alkali metal sulphate ZnSO 4 , CaSO 4 or potassium alum. The sorbent may be activated charcoal coupled either with an anion-exchange resin, or with a bed of In sponge.
