Abstract

1519013 Photo-crosslinkable polyurethane compositions BASF AG 12 Sept 1975 [12 Sept 1974] 37560/75 Heading C3V A photo-crosslinkable composition comprises a photo-initiator, an olefinically unsaturated monomer and an unsaturated polyurethane which has been manufactured by a process comprising (a) reaction with a C4 to C12- carboxylic acid anhydride of from 20 to 80% of the hydroxyl groups of a polyester A having a hydroxyl number of 100 to 300 and derived from an aliphatic polyhydric C2 to C8-alcohol and a C4 to C8-dicarboxylic acid, or an esterforming derivative thereof the polyester-forming materials containing at least 50 mole per cent saturated aliphatic compounds, to form a polyester B having half-ester groupings which contain carboxyl groups, (b) reaction of at least a part of the remaining hydroxyl groups of the polyester B with the isocyanate group-containing product obtained by reaction of a C6 to C36-diisocyanate with a monoacrylate or monomethacrylate of a C2 to C10-aliphatic diol, or with a diisocyanate/(meth)acrylate mixture from which such a product can be obtained, (c) appropriate, reaction of any residual isocyanate groups with an alcohol or amine and/or (d) if desired, reaction of at least a part of the free carboxyl groups of the reaction product with a base. Examples are given in which (i) a polyester obtained from adipic acid, phthalic anhydride, 1,2-propylene glycol and 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane is reacted with phthalic anhydride and then in solution in methyl methacrylate with the product obtained by reaction of isophoronediisocyanate with 1,4-butanediol monoacrylate, before alpha-methylolbenzoin methyl ether and hydroquinone, or dimethylhydroquinone, are added optionally together with diethaxolamine, and the resulting composition is applied to a substrate and exposed imagewise to ultraviolet light to form a reliefprinting plate; (ii) a polyester obtained as in (i) is reacted with a glutaric anhydride and then reacted in methyl methacrylate with an isophorone diisocyanate/1,4 - butanediol monoacrylate product; (iii) as (i) except that methyl methacrylate is used together with a mixture of hydroxypropyl acrylates; (iv) as (i) except that the isophoronediisocyanate is reacted with hydroxypropyl acrylates, the resulting product being mixed with the polyester, hydroquinone and benzoin isopropyl ether.
