Abstract

1518800 Lubricants OROBIS Ltd 28 Oct 1975 [18 Nov 1974] 49766/74 Heading C5F [Also in Division C2] A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of lubricating base oil and a minor proportion of a product when obtained by reacting an alkylene oxide having the structural formula: wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups and may be the same or different with the sulphurized Mannich condensation product obtained by reacting a sulphurized alkyl phenol of structural formula: wherein (i) R is an alkyl group containing from 6 to 30 carbon atoms and from 95 to 60 number percent of the alkyl groups are straight chain alkyl groups, (ii) n is an integer within the range 1 to 3, (iii) m is zero or an integer having the value 1 or 2 and (iv) the weight percent of sulphur is in the range 0.5 to 15 with an aldehyde of the formula R<SP>3</SP>CHO wherein R<SP>3</SP> is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and (a) a polyamine having the structural formula: wherein (i) X is a divalent alkylene radical containing from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, (ii) n' is an integer from 1 to 10, or (b) an amine of structural formula: wherein (i) R<SP>4</SP> is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or a phenyl group and (ii) R<SP>5</SP> is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or a phenyl group, or (c) a Mannich condensation product formed by the reaction of an alkyl-substituted phenol of structural formula: wherein R<SP>6</SP> is an alkyl radical containing from 1 to 30 carbon atoms with an aldehyde of structural Formula (III) and a polyamine of structural Formula (IV) or an amine of structural Formula (V). The lubricant may be a mineral oil derived from petroleum or a synthetic oil, and may contain other additives.
