Abstract

1518082 Covering tapes POST OFFICE 20 June 1975 [28 June 1974] 28795/74 Heading B8G To produce a covered filament, a filament is supplied from a melt, at least one tape is applied to the filament to envelop the filament, the or each tape extending in the longitudinal direction of the filament, applying heat to at least one of the tapes, and closing the envelope in the longitudinal direction, the or each strip comprising a bonding strip of plastics material with a high melting point and a coating of low melting point plastics material forming a bonding material, the or each tape being applied to the filament with the coating in contact with the filament, and in the covered filament the or each tape is partially bonded so that it can be peeled from the filament. Fibre optic filament 1, Fig. 1, pulled from a melt, engages tape 3 in the grooved periphery of driven pulley 2, and is carried to the flat rim of driven roller 4 where tapes 3, 5, of plastics material engage. The filament is pulled by the tapes although at least part of the pull may be applied direct to the filament. Several filaments may be covered by the tapes, e.g. using a multi-grooved pulley. Alternatively, only tape 3 may be used, the tape being folded and sealed after leaving pulley 2. In Fig. 2 covered filament 7 is turned through 90 degrees between the roller pairs. To heat seal the tapes, Fig. 3, filament 15 and tape 17 engage on the flat rim of driven wheel 16, and further engage tape 21 on the grooved rim of freely rotatable annulus 18 heated by induction heater 22. Wheel 16 may be replaced by a second heated annulus. The tapes, of plastics material have a low melting point coating on one side. Wheel 24, spring-biased against driven wheel 23 which pulls the filament, seals the tapes. Tape tension is maintained by reel brakes 38, 44, driven rollers 39, 45, and vertically slidable pulleys 41, 47. Sensors 51, 52, respond to the pulley positions and adjust the tape feed. The tape heating may be varied so that the filament is partially bonded to the tapes, or filament bonding may be prevented by providing annulus 18 with a groove to bridge the filament. The tapes may be heated by a hot air jet, a flame-heated PTFE roller, or dielectric heating, or. by contacting electrodes or by ultrasonic means.
