In Germany April 20, 1935 .3 Claims. (01. 216-30) This invention relates to a method and means for producing an air and moisture-proof rip seal for packages, more particularly cigarette boxes. In order to produce such a seal, it is known tounwind a strip from a reel, pass it by a glueing device so as to apply an adhesive to one side thereof and to cause the strip to adhere around the joints oi. the package.
The gist of the invention resides in the fact that after applying the glue,a narrower ripping strip or spaced ripping cords are arranged on the adhesive side of the strip and that a ripping tongue is formed after applying the ripping strip to the l sealing strip. The layer of glue is also covered on one end by a strip of paper and this part of the strip is provided with slots on both sides of the ripping strip ,or .ripping cords.

- Referring to Figures 1 and 2 it is to be noted that the seal is formed from a foil strip I-, on the adhesive side of which a narrower ripping strip or end Ib of the strip I is partially covered by a nonglued strip or pieceof paper 3 so that the covered part cannot stick to the portion In of the strip I..
Slots 4, are provided in the end lb adjacent the edges of the seal strip or in the vicinity-of the ripping cords and by means of these slots a tongue is formed for ripping the" seal in a manner as machine frame. The cords are held apart by a 45 shown in Fig. 2.
According to the invention, theworking method for producing the seal resides in the fact that the seal strip provided with the ripping strip or. the
, ripping cords is covered on the overlapping end the strip I is drawn. The seal strip I removed from the reel 6 is moved over a glue wheel I so that an adhesive is applied to one side. The glueing apparatus comprises a glue container 3 and a nozzle 9. The glue wheel I rotates with the pe- '5 riphery adjacent the. orifice of the nozzle 9. In order that the glue will not be applied to the outer most edges of the strip I so as to protrude laterally over the edges of the strip and soil the package, the edges of the strip I are covered by covering 10 members I0, Fig. 3, whereby narrow edges of the seal strip remain free oi glue. The glue container 8 may be swung about the shaft I8 of the glue wheel! as shown by dot-anddash Hues in Figure 3. 'The glue wheel I is also mounted in bearing arms and adapted to swing on pivots I9'in order that it may be moved into 20 I the position shown by dot-and-dash lines in Figure 3. This arrangement permits easy cleaning of the glue-applying apparatus.
After the strip I has passed the glueing 'apparatus, it enters a drying device 20, which has 25 the form of a vertical chamber., In this drying chamber, rollers 2| are arranged, Figs. 3 and 4, which are driven from the main shaft of the ma,- chine.v From the lower rollers 2I, the seal strip passes over an upper guide roller 22. The strip is so conducted in several loops through the chamber 20 'whereby rapid and eiiicient drying is ensured. The drying process or the volatilization of the glue solvent may also be accelerated by arranging heating devices 23 in the drying chamber 20. 35
It is to be noted that the strip I always passes over the guide rollers crosswise so that the glued side is located externally. After passing out of the drying chamber 20, thestrip I passes over a tensioning or equalizing roller 24, carried by 40 rocking lever, to a roller 25.
The ripping cords 2 are then applied to the glued side of the strip. These cords are removed from reels 26 whichare rotatably mounted on the guide member 21 to the extent required for the ripping width and the cords are pressed onto the glue layer of the strip I by means of a weighted roller 28. The stepwise advance of the strip I with these ripping cords embedded on glued side thereof, see Figure 4, is efiected'by pliers or gripping means 3i which are opened and closed periodically and reciprocate over a distance equal to a the length of one seal strip. The pliers 3| coopbox) has been cut off, the latch 30. presses the seal strip resiliently against the guide 29'so as to prevent the strip I from sliding back under the action of the swinging equalization roller 24.
When a severed piece of the strip I is to be laid around a package, the strip I must be advanced,
stepwise while the guide rollers 2|, which move the. strip I from the reel 6 through the glueing apparatus and the drying device, rotate continually. The equalizing roller 24. swings up and down whereby the seal strip from the glueing apparatus to the guide 29 is kept under tension.
When the pliers 3| are moved in the direction of the arrow 39, they engage, at the end of the stroke, the free end of the'strip I and advance it to the extent of a new sealing length. Shortly before the end of the stroke, a paper strip 3,

This movement of the paper strip 3 is effected by a driving pulley ,or roller 4I shown particularly in Fig. 5. An endless belt 43 passes around the.
roller 4| and around a pulley 42 spaced therefrom. The roller 4I may for instance be driven by means of a ratchet wheel 44 shown in Fig. 6 and a pawl carried by a lever 45.
The strip 3 drawn from the reel 46 passes through a guide 41 which is rotatably mounted on a pivot 48. This guide normally occupies the position shown-in full lines in Figure 5. Immediately before the pliers .3I close and a fresh seal strip section is advanced the guide 41 is swung into the position shownin dotted lines and the paper strip 31s fed forward. Thereupon'the shears 49 close which movement may be effected by a cam disk 50 shown in Fig. 3. ',The strip section to be placed on the package is thereby cut from the continuous strip I and the paper strip 3 applied on the glued side of its end is'simultaneously out. As shown in Fig. 5 a press member 5| is mounted on 'one'leg of the shears 49 which, during,the cutting operation presses the paper strip.

After the strip section for sealing a package has been severed from the roll, it is carried alongwith the package or box 52 in the direction of the arrow 53 whereupon the seal strip is arranged around the opening joint of the box in a known manner.
I claim:
a rippable strip adapted for sealing packages which comprises, removing an air and moisture-proof strip from a roll thereof, applying an adhesive to one side of the moving strip, embedding a narrower ripping strip inv the adhesive face of the moving strip, and covering a portion of the strip on the adhesive face with a strip of paper, cutting slots along both edges of the ripping strip and thereafter severing the strip adjacent the paper covered end.
2. In apparatus adapted to complete the formation of a package sealing strip having a narrower ripping strip adhesively attached to one face thereof to provide a composite rippable sealing strip for a package, means for intermittently 'moving the composite strip, a reel adapted to hold a continuous paper strip wound thereon,
means for feeding forward said paper strip, a
cutting device arrangedin the path of movement of the composite strip, movable means for guid ing the paper strip from the reel to a position adjacent the adhesive-coated face of the first mentioned strip and adjacent the: cutting device so as to cover a portion of the adhesive coated face, means associated with said cutting device .for urging an 'end'portion of the paper strip against the adhesive coated face of the composite strip, and said cutting device being adapted to sever the compositestrip and the paper 'strip whereby the end portion of the composite strip is covered on the adhesive coated face by the severed portion of the paper strip.
3. Apparatus according to claim 2 characterized by the fact that a slide member having a pair of cutters is moved simultaneously with the cutting device towards the composite stripand slots are out in the end of-the strip along both, sides of the ripping strip.
