Abstract

1517754 Styryl dyestuffs SANDOZ Ltd 30 Sept 1975 [4 Oct 1974 29 Jan 1975] 39937/75 Heading C4P The invention comprises styryl dyestuffs of the general formula wherein R 1 is C 2 -C 8 alkylene or C 5 -C 8 -cycloalkylene, R 2 is C 5 -C 8 - cycloalkyl optionally substituted by up to 3 methyl groups, C 1 -C 10 alkyl optionally substituted by C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, C 1 -C 4 alkylthio, C 1 -C 4 alkylcarbonyloxy, C 1 -C 4 alkoxycarbonyloxy or C 1 -C 4 alkoxycarbonyl, or is C 3 -C 10 alkenyl, either R 3 is H, halogen, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy or C 1 -C 4 alkoxycarbonyl, and R 4 is H, halogen, cyano, trifluoromethyl C 5 -C 8 cycloalkyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, C 5 -C 8 cycloalkoxy, C 1 -C 4 alkylthio, C 5 -C 8 -cycloalkylthio, phenyl, phenoxy, phenylthio, phenylthio-C 1 -C 4 alkyl, phenyl-C 1 -C 4 alkyl, phenoxy C 1 -C 4 alkyl, phenylazo, C 1 -C 4 alkoxycarbonyl, C 5 -C 8 cyclo alkoxycarbonyl, phenoxycarbonyl, benzoyl, benzoyloxy, phenoxycarbonyloxy, phenylsulphonyloxy or phenyl-C 1 -C 4 alkylthio, or R 3 and R 4 are located on adjacent carbon atoms and complete a 5-or 6-membered saturated or unsaturated carbo- or heterocyclic aromatic ring optionally having a benzene ring fused thereto and R 5 is H, Cl, Br, methyl or methoxy, any alkyl or alkoxy radical as R 3 or R 4 being optionally substituted by C 1 -C 4 - alkoxy, phenyl or C 1 -C 4 alkoxycarbonyl; any cycloalkyl contained in R 4 being optionally substituted by up to three methyl groups or by C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, phenyl or C 1 -C 4 alkoxy carbonyl, any phenyl group contained in R 4 being optionally substituted by up to two halogen, methyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy or C 1 -C 4 alkoxycarbonyl radicals with the provisos (i) that any alkoxy radical substituted by alkoxy has at least two carbon atoms and (ii) where R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are all H then R 2 is alkyl, alkylthioalkyl or alkoxyalkyl which all contain at least 6 carbon atoms or is C 3 -C 10 alkenyl. They are prepared by reacting a compound of general formula wherein X is O or= N<SP>+</SP>R 7 R 6 A<SP>-</SP> wherein either R 7 is alkyl and R 6 is alkyl or phenyl or R 6 and R 7 together form a 4 or 5 membered alkylene chain and A- is an anion with malononitrile. The reaction preferably takes place in an inert solvent at 50-150‹C in presence of an organic base. The dyes dye polyesters, 2À5 and triacetates and polyamides in yellow and greenish yellow shades.
