Abstract

1517699 Spring actuators GIRLING Ltd 24 Sept 1975 [8 Oct 1974 5 Nov 1974] 43612/74 and 47854/74 Heading F1D A brake actuating rod or member 11 is drawn in tension, into a cylinder 1 of a spring applied/ fluid-pressure released actuator by a spring 7 to apply a brake 14, an adjusting nut 12 being provided on the rod 11 remote from the brake. In Fig. 1 the piston 3 is secured to a sleeve 4 with a flange 6 to limit movement of the rod 11 rightwards when the chamber 9 is pressurized with air, and the end wall 5 is held in the cylinder 2 by bolts 19 extending through slots 21 of the cylinder so that the bolts 19 engage abutments 22 to prevent their rotation unless the spring load is being supported. The end-wall 5 may be modified to support an annular hydraulic brake slave cylinder around the rod 11, Fig. 6 (not shown). To facilitate safe dismantling of a diaphragm actuator, Fig. 7, the sleeve 4 has a stop member 36 screwed to its end which is slidable on a further sleeve 34. The sleeve 34 has a circlip 37 engageable by the stop member and is secured to an end wall 33 of the actuator by a unit 35 which is removable to expand the spring 7 gradually. In a further modification of Fig. 1, Fig. 8 (not shown), a second sleeve (41) is interposed between the rod 11 and sleeve 4 allowing dismantling without upsetting the adjustment of the nut 12.
