Abstract

1517533 Stress wave emission analysis; flaw detection M N BENTLEY and A G DENHAM 1 April 1976 [3 April 1975(2)] 13789/75 and 13790/75 Addition to 1343694 Heading G1G The nature of a propagating defect in a structure is determined by stress wave emission analysis, the method comprising detecting the arrival of a burst of stress wave.emission energy at a transducer 1 on the surface of the structure, detecting the arrival of the peak energy level of the burst by repeatedly comparing the amplitude of successive cycles of the burst with the amplitude of succeeding cycles of the same burst by a comparator 9, monostable 10 being triggered whenever the amplitude of a cycle exceeds that of its predecessor to reset the sample and hold circuit 7, whereby the final value stored at 8 is the peak value, and analyzing the form of that burst of stress wave energy, e.g. by digitizing, 17, the peak value and/or measuring the rise time between the front of the burst and its peak by counting clock pulses in counter 12. The apparatus is similar to that described in U.K. Specification 1343694. A gate may be included in the transducer output to pass only signals exceeding a predetermined minimum level.
