Abstract

1517513 Measuring railway track alignment BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 26 Sept 1975 [23 Oct 1974] 45868/74 Heading G1N [Also in Division B 7] The invention relates to an apparatus and method for measuring the alignment of a length of curved track which has been designed for passage of a rail vehicle at the "equilibrium speed" i.e. the speed at which the vector sum of the acceleration due to gravity and the centripetal acceleration remains normal to the plane of the track. The apparatus comprises a vehicle arranged to run on the track and carrying accelerometer means for determining the instantaneous lateral acceleration of the vehicle and detecting means for detecting track and vehicle parameters and combining information representative thereof with a correction term derived from the "equilibrium speed" to provide an output representative of track alignment. The combination is given as a mathematical expression in the Specification.
