Abstract

1517347 Electro-photographic projection printing XEROX CORP 4 Aug 1975 [5 Aug 1974] 32480/75 Heading G2A Images of both sides of a double-sided original 1 in an object plane are projected on to an image plane for copying. The original 1 is held between hinged transparent plates 2, 3 and illuminated on both sides by lamps 4, 5 energized one at a time. Light from the illuminated side is reflected into a lens system 8 which, with the aid of a mirror 9, forms an image on the surface of a rotating drum 6 with a photo-conductive surface. The drum 6 forms part of a conventional electro-photographic apparatus for producing copies on sheets fed to a bin 15. As shown in Fig. 2B, the original I in its holder 2, 3 is moved to the right during exposure, by means of a rack 17 and pinion 18. Lamp 4 is on, and light from the top of the original is reflected by mirror 7 into the lens system 8. The speed of movement of the original is related to the speed of drum 6. When the top side has been copied, lamp 4 is extinguished and lamp 5 is energized by operation of a limit switch, light from the underside of original 1 being reflected by mirror 10 into the lens system 8. The original is returned, producing a latent image of the original on the next portion of the surface of drum 6. The optical system orients the images such that pages of text (for example) have their lines running sequentially in the same direction. Arrangements may be made to copy both sides of the original on to opposite sides of a copy sheet, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). Two simplex documents may be placed back to back and copied.
