Abstract

1447819 Electro-photographic copiers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 29 Jan 1975 [14 Feb 1974] 3838/75 Headings G2A and G2H An electro-photographic copying machine comprises a photo-conductive surface 12 which is movable past an exposure station 14, a development station 40 and a transfer corona station 16 for transferring powder images on the surface 12 to copy sheets 17 which are subsequently moved to a direct contact heat fusing unit 51, the exposure station including an optical scanning apparatus 20 for producing incremental images from an exposure window 31 and directing them via mirrors 33, 34 to the surface 12, and a light intensity sensing device 70 for sensing the average intensity of each incremental image produces a predetermined signal in response to the sensing of an average intensity below a predetermined threshold, the signal being used to operate reducing means such as an erase lamp 60, whereby unwanted powder at the leading edge of a copy sheet due to an uncovered portion 29 of the exposure window 31 is avoided. The scanning apparatus 20 includes a lens 21 mounted on a carriage 22 moving in synchronism with the surface 12 which is illuminated by a narrow light beam from a stationary light 35 via a stationary dichroic mirror 36 and a moving mirror 26 mounted on a carriage 27 moving also in synchronism with the surface 12. The development station 40 includes a magnetic brush unit 42. The lamp 60 is used to erase the photoconductor 12 between the images intended for successive copy sheets under the control of a cam 61 and switches 62, 63, and a further switch (65), Fig. 2 (not shown), is operated by non-closure of a cover 37 having a white background 38, to make operation of the lamp 60 dependent on the sensing device 70. The light intensity sensing device 70, Fig. 3 (not shown), comprises a photo-transistor (90) and control circuitry therefor, Fig. 4 (not shown) includes a delay device (66) which allows for the time for a point on the photo-conductive surface 12 to move from the exposure station 14 to the lamp 60. Deposition of unwanted powder at the leading edge of a copy sheet may, alternatively, be prevented by increasing the bias voltage on the magnetic brush unit 42 to a level approaching the discharge level on the surface 12, or the transfer corona 16 may be controlled so as not to transfer the unwanted powder.
