Abstract

1517228 Electrically heated furnaces POST OFFICE 10 March 1977 [17 Feb 1976] 06119/76 Heading F4B [Also in Division H5] A furnace for heating straight elongate workpieces, e.g. a silica pre-form to enable a dielectric optical waveguide to be drawn from it, comprises a tubular graphite heating element 1 located within a casing 2, carbon foam insulation 3 partly filling the space between the heating element 1 and the casing 2, and means to prevent the ingress of air into the furnace. Iris diaphragms 14 and 16 are provided to enable the effective inlet and outlet areas of the furnace to be controlled. Inert gas, e.g. argon, is supplied to the furnace interior from a chamber 12 surrounding the outlet from the furnace, with the flow of inert gas into the chamber 12 through a pipe 13 being adjusted to prevent the ingress of air into the heating zone. The heating element 1, which includes a central portion 4 having a reduced wall thickness into which a helical groove 5 is machined, is either heated directly by passing a current through it or by a R-F heating coil surrounding it. As shown current is applied to the element 1 via water cooled electrodes 9 and 10, with top electrode 9 being mounted on a pair of aluminium discs 11. A graphite foil 6 acting as a heat reflector surrounds the element 1. The heating zone temperature is measured through a lens 17 using an optical pyrometer.
