Abstract

1,087,013. Electric resistance furnaces. McGRAW-EDISON CO. May 7, 1965 [Sept. 25, 1964], No. 19352/65. Heading H5H. A furnace comprises a vacuum chamber 12 containing an electrically energized source of infra-red radiation 32, means for evacuating the chamber and means for conducting metal 17 to be treated into and out of the chamber. In a vacuum furnace for continuously annealing strip titanium 17, the strip enters and leaves through a cylindrical roll housing 10 containing sets of rolls 15 between evacuated ducts 18, passes into a chamber 11 and then up and down a vertical cylindrical metal furnace chamber 12 divided into zones. In the first zone the strip is raised to or near to annealing temperature, in the second the temperature is maintained or varied slightly and lastly it is cooled by passing between water-cooled plates (84), Fig. 3 (not shown) protected from the heaters 32 by a reflector plate (87). Water-cooled reflector plates 36, 37 between the heaters 32 and chamber 12 and side reflective plates (39) extend over both heating zones. Each heater comprises a coiled tungsten filament in a quartz tube and an aluminium parabolic reflector (34). The ends of the heaters are slidably supported within tubes (60), Fig. 5 (not shown), which are mounted in cylindrical sections (45) in apertures (43) in the chamber 12. In another embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), each heater is enclosed and supported within a quartz tube (80) through which cooling gas is passed.
