Abstract

1516792 Tubular membrane apparatus and separation process HITACHI Ltd and HITACHI PLANT ENG & CONSTRUCTION CO Ltd 16 March 1976 [22 March 1975] 10531/76 Heading B1X A tubular membrane separation process comprises feeding a solution to be treated, with the application of pressure, to a module composed of a tube of a semipermeable membrane and a liquid-permeable support member surrounding the membrane so that a solvent component of the solution passes through the wall of the tubular membrane whilst the concentrated solution passes along the inside of the tubular membrane, and collecting the solvent that has permeated through the wall of the membrane, a plurality of modules being connected in multiple stages and arranged in gradually decreased numbers for the stages where the concentration of the solution increases, and further comprises facing a plurality of resilient elements by means of a liquid carrier along the membrane tubes and using a decreased number of resilient elements at least between two successive stages, the reduction in number of the resilient elements being dependent on the reduction in the number of modules between successive stages. The liquid carrier may be the solution to be treated. The resilient elements may be sponge balls of rubber. The corresponding apparatus is described.
