Abstract

1515441 Cleaning filling heads SERAC SA 27 April 1976 16993/76 Heading B8T A filling head 1, of a filling machine, having a magnetically actuated value, e.g. ball 3, is cleaned by a method comprising the steps of mechanically opening the valve by the introduction of a collector below the filling head, and introducing cleaning products in the direction of the normal flow of product through the head. The filling head preferably includes a protuberance 14 carried by a sleeve 4 slidable in the filling head, whereby upward movement of the sleeve lifts the ball 3 from its seat 2 to allow flow of cleaning liquid through the head. The sleeve 4 is of smaller diameter than the inside of the head 1 to allow cleaning liquid to flow between the sleeve and the inner wall of the head. The sleeve includes grates 7 to reduce foaming of the product to be filled and the sleeve is held in the head by an annular seal 10. The collector is clamped to the flange 15 of the head for cleaning and thus a bar across the collector pushes against the sleeve 4 to raise the sleeve and thus the ball 3. In an alternative embodiment, the protuberance is carried by a drum slidable in a socket attached to the head by a screwthreaded collar. A filling machine including a plurality of filling heads may be operated for cleaning by means of individual collectors attached to each head or by means of a common collector simultaneously operating on a plurality of filling heads.
