Abstract

151,538. Wade, H., (Lockwood, L. V.). March 4, 1920. Pressing.-Relates to a machine for making the necks of carboys and large glass containers with internally-screwed mouths, and consists in forming the mouth by pressing a charge of metal on to the hot neck of the carboy immediately after it is removed from the mould. The machine comprises a table A on which is mounted a neck mould consisting of a lower section 2 which is firmly secured to the table, and two upper sections 3 which are hinged to the section 2 and can be opened and closed by a sliding rod 7 operated by a pedal. The upper sections 3 have extensions 3<b> which are formed with a cylindrical cavity 6 adapted to hold a charge of metal. A pressing- plunger 17 is operated by a fluid-pressure cylinder 18 mounted on a carriage 24 that can be moved backwards and forwards along guide bars 25 by means of a hand lever 32. The threaded plug 11<c> that forms the interior of the mouth of the carboy is attached to a mandrel C which slides through a bearing 8a and both slides through and screws into a bearing 9<a>. In use, the mandrel is screwed into the bearing 9<a> by means of a handwheel 13 so as to project the plug 11<c> into the mould, and the press cylinder 18 is moved into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, so that the forward ends of cams D<3>, Fig. 2, engage the extensions 3<b> of the mould and thus lock the mould. A carboy is removed from the mould in which is has been blown, and while the neck position is still hot, has its neck forced into the mould as shown. A charge of metal is then dropped into the mould cavity 6, the cylinder is moved into position above the mould and compressed air is admitted so that the plunger 17 is forced into the cavity and presses the metal around the plug 11<c> to form the mouth of the bottle. The plunger is then withdrawn, the handwheel 13 turned to screw the plug 11<c> out of the mouth of the bottle, the press cylinder moved rearwardly, and the mould opened.
