Abstract

1514835 Silage conditioner BASF AG 15 Oct 1975 [19 Oct 1974 6 Nov 1974] 42177/75 Heading A2B A silage conditioner comprises a solution of urea in propionic acid, which may be aqueous or anhydrous, the weight ratio of urea:propionic acid being from 1:3 to 1:0.4, and preferably from 1:2.5 to 1:0.8. In addition to urea, propionic acid and optionally water, the silage conditioner may contain one or more lower aliphatic acids and/or inorganic acids. This conditioner is added to green forage to upgrade it for ensiling, in an amount which depends on the intended degree of supplementation of protein, and may be from 0.1 to 3 per cent by weight, based on the green forage. The conditioner, as well as increasing the feed's nutritional value, through anti-microbial action of propionic acid also acts as a preservative.
