Abstract

1514373 Styrene MONTEDISON SpA 4 March 1976 [7 May 1975] 08727/76 Heading C5E Styrene is prepared by the oxidative dehydrogenation of vinyl cyclohexene at 100-400‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising 0À1-5 wt. per cent palladium on an inert substrate. The oxidant may be O 2 , e.g. as air or otherwise diluted, or another oxidant such as SO 2 . The catalyst may also include an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal component. The substrate may be SiO 2 , SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 , zeolite, kieselguhr, activated carbon, pumice, a polyamide or, preferably, alumina. The catalyst may be activated by heat treatment or by reductive treatment, e.g. by hydrazine. Ethylbenzene produced as a by-product may be recycled and brought into contact with the catalyst mixed with the vinyl cyclohexene feed.
