Abstract

1513721 Thermoplastics films POLYTAPE LTD 21 May 1975 [8 April 1974] 15451/74 Heading B5A A thermoplastics film of polyamide, or polyester, and preferably of polypropylene, having at least one ribbed surface is produced by extruding a film 2 of thermoplastic material and then, while the film is still in its plastic state, sucking the extruded film into contact with an uneven surface provided by a helix 16 wound circumferentially of a roller. The film is sucked against the surface by fans connected at opposite axial ends of the roller, and which continuously draw air between the turns of the roller to its interior, thereby also acting also to cool the roller surface in the region unoccupied by the film. Additional cooling of the film may be provided by a water bath 7 or, alternatively, by an air cooling head, Fig. 3, around part of the drum periphery. The ribs may produce delustring, or facilitate needle penetration in carpet backing comprising a fabric woven from tapes slit from the film.
