Abstract
1513638 Graft polymer fibrils SOLVAY & CIE 1 Nov 1976 [3 Nov 1975] 45285/76 Heading B5B Graft polymer fibrils capable of bonding to cellulose fibres present in a paper pulp are produced by incorporating into a polymer mix at least one polar monomer capable of being grafted onto the said polymer, grafting the monomer onto the polymer and flash spinning the mixture immediately following the grafting. Suitable polymers are polyolifines, polyamides, polyesters, polyurethanes, polycarbonates, vinyl polymers or acrylic polymers or mixtures thereof and graftable monomers are acrylic, methacrylic or allyl monomers or an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid or derivative thereof. Maleic anhydride is preferred. Grafting may be induced by the presence of free radicals generated by high energy radiation or of a compound which generates free radicals. The molten polymer/solvent mixture may also contain 1-902 kg wt of polymer of a starch, cellulose or cellulosic derivative and optionally an organic acid. The fibres are used to prepare papers (see Div. D2).
