Abstract
1513128 Pressure reducing valves for brake systems AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS LTD 25 July 1975 [25 July 1974] 32887/74 Heading F2F A pressure reducing hydraulic control valve assembly 19 is incorporated into a dual circuit hydraulic braking system to control communication between a tandem master cylinder 15 and front and rear brakes 12 and 14 respectively and comprises tubular components 23 and 24 forming a stepped through bore housing stepped pistons 34 and 49 associated with rear and front brake circuits respectively. An integral plunger 20 of the piston 34 engages a leaf spring 21 resiliently connected to rear axle 22 such that rear axle load variations cause variations in the spring force on plunger 20. When the pressure transmitted to the valve reaches a certain level dependent on the ratio of the effective areas of the pistons 34 and 49 the pressures in bores 25 and 31 are sufficient to separate pistons 34 and 49 against spring 74 and leaf spring 21 closing ball valves 41 and 62 which control communication between master cylinder 15 and brakes 14 and 12 respectively. Further increase in pressure transmitted from master cylinder 15 causes a pressure build up in annular spaces 45 and 66,without increase in brake pressure eventually forcing the pistons 34 and 49 together again and reopening valves 41 and 62. This separating and closing cycle is repeated as master cylinder pressure increases having the net effect that the rate of increase of brake cylinder pressure is less than that generated in the master cylinder. Alternatively a second spring may be provided to act directly on the piston 49.
