Abstract

151,253. Trost, S. O. E. T. July 18, 1919, [Convention date]. Directive wireless signalling; aerials; wireless aeronautic signals. - Apparatus particularly adapted for aircraft is arranged to determine the direction of propagation or reception of electromagnetic waves in three dimensions. As shown in Fig. 1, three loop aerials a, b, c are set up in planes mutually at right-angles, and are connected by three leads, including series condensers h, i, k, to three circular coils d, e, f mutually at right-angles, each lead being connected to a pair of coils. The direction of arriving waves is determined by adjusting the position of a movable coil g until maximum reception is obtained. If the coil g is connected to an oscillation-generator, radiation will be a maximum in a direction determined by the position of the coil. In a modification shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, four wires of equal length l m n o are suspended so that their outer ends lie at the apices of a regulator tetrahedron, and their inner ends near its centre. In addition, the apices may be joined by other conductors shown in dotted lines. The inner ends of the wires l m n o are connected to the four corners of a regular tetrahedron whose edges are conductive and at whose centre is mounted a search coil g. In practice, the field influencing the coil 9 is increased by connecting in each of the wires near its mid point a coil of one or more turn, such as Fig. 3, the coil being tangential to the wire and in a plane containing it and at right angles to the opposite wire. A system of six coils is thus obtained, and they are proportioned, as shown in Fig. 4, so that each lies on a great circle of the sphere to which the sides of the tetrahedron are tangents.
