Abstract
650,041. Aerials. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. Aug. 7, 1947, No. 21714. Convention date, Sept. 6, 1943. [Class 40 (vii)] An ultra high-frequency antenna comprises two equal lengths of conductor 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, each formed into a helix, the pair of helices being supplied at one end, one in one phase and the other in the reverse phase, from a two-conductor feeder 17, 18 and the helices being arranged in side-by-side formation with their axes parallel. Each helix turns in the same (clockwise or counter clockwise) direction and has the same number of turns. The ends 21, 22 remote from the feeder are terminated in an impedance 23 selected to produce travelling waves in the helices. In order that the radiation from each element of the conductors should be additive in the direction of propagation 24, the pitch P and radius of curvature r of each helix are selected to satisfy the equation Suitable dimensions are Since rotational symmetry exists with respect to the helix axes parallel to the direction of radiation, the radiated wave is circularly polarized.
