Abstract

1512381 Bearings NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 6 May 1975 [7 Feb 1974] 00640/74 Heading F2A A gas film thrust bearing comprises a rotatable shaft 7, a movable thrust member 13 carried by the shaft and a corresponding fixed thrust member 21, a space 20, Fig. 2, between the two members for a gas film to hold them apart, the force of separation being generated by the pressure in the film, and means to generate the film including a source of gas having a pressure related to the force urging the two members together. A modification means for the gas film is provided, which means varies according to the axial oscillations of the shaft in order to dampen said oscillations. The modification means is generally a plenum 30, and the movable thrust member 13 an impeller. The gas film bearing 5 may be used for the axial support of the shaft of a compressor for a gas such as helium.
