Abstract

1511861 Window-winding mechanism SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 July 1976 [29 April 1975] 17753/75 Heading E2M In a motor-driven window winding mechanism, rotation of an operating shaft 55 applies movement to a window and a reversible electric motor acts through a flexible cable (not shown) to drive a worm 10 of a reduction gearing including a gear wheel 11 rotatable in a casing 12, through a coupling device 29, 30 through which the gear wheel 11 is coupled to the operating shaft 55. The gear wheel 11 is provided with an axially extending projection 24 which extends through a bearing surface 23 of the casing 12. The coupling device includes a hexagonal shaped plate-like part 29 which enters an aperture of hexagonal shape moulded in one side of the gear wheel 11 and the device for coupling the part 29 to the operating shaft 55 consists of a moulded insert 30 having a sleeve portion of square cross-section which fits in the part 29, the insert being keyed to the end of the operating shaft. If the motor driven window winding mechanism fails, the insert 30 is removed to disengage the reduction gearing from the operating shaft 55 and permit manual operation of the shaft.
