Abstract
1511425 Treated suture J PFRIMMER & CO 18 June 1976 [20 March 1976] 25491/76 Heading D1P A surgical suture material of braided multifilament polyester has within the interstices and/or upon the surfaces thereof, a fluorocarbon polymer comprising a straight chain carbon backbone not all the carbon atoms of which are exclusively substituted by fluorine. The preferred fluorocarbon polymers are copolymers of ethylene and tetrafluoroethylene, and copolymers of hexafluoropropylene and tetrafluoroethylene. The polymer is applied by passing the suture material through an aqueous dispersion of the polymer followed by drying and hotstretching e.g. at 220-230‹C by 40-50% of its original length. The treated suture material has increased resistance to degradation during sterilization with gamma rays or ethylene oxide, and improved knotting characteristics.
