1511393 Spinel whiskers LENIGRAD TEKHNOLOGICHE INST IM LENSOVETA 24 May 1976 21385/76 Heading C1A Spinel whiskers are made by calcining magnesia and alumina at 1300-1800‹C in air in an enclosed space in the presence of a carbonaceous material, the whiskers growing on the alumina surface. The reaction is preferably performed in the presence of aluminium sulphide which is present in the ratio of sulphide : magnesia of 1:5-10. The carbonaceous material may be solid carbon, preferably graphite, or a gas such as CO or CO 2 . In one embodiment a column of stacked tablets of magnesia is inserted along the axis of a cylindrical alumina vessel and graphite is poured into the bottom of the vessel. Certain of the magnesia tablets may be replaced with tablets of aluminium sulphide or a single moulding of magnesia or mixture of magnesia and aluminium sulphide may be employed. In another embodiment tubular members of alumina and magnesia are arranged alternately in concentric circles and the arrangement is placed between two graphite plates. In a further embodiment a plate of alumina and a plate of magnesia are spaced by graphite plates. Any of these constructions are then placed in the furnace for calcination. Preferably the distance between the magnesia and alumina is less than 30 mm.
