Abstract
1488665 CaSO 4 .2H 2 O calcination; gypsum kettles BPB INDUSTRIES Ltd 31 Oct 1974 [27 Nov 1973] 54940/73 Heading ClA Calcium sulphate dihydrate is calcined by supplying heat to the calcination vessel, both indirectly through the external walls, and directly via the introduction of non-reactive hot gases into the interior of the calcining mass through a tube extending generally downwardly from the top of the vessel, which tube is provided with at least one opening in its lower part immersed in the calcining mass. The hot gas introduced into the sulphate charge is preferably generated by combustion of a fuel, A typical apparatus of the invention is shown in Fig. 3; tubes 29 and 31 respectively carry the dihydrate into, and the hemihydrate out of, the calcination vessel, hot gas being supplied via (4), and leaving via (33) which leads to a cyclone or other dust collection apparatus (not shown); the solids collected at the cyclone &c., are returned to the calcination vessel via tube 36. If desired the injection of hot gas may be via a plurality of holes along a hollow stirrer shaft (38), or via a separate gas inlet tube (4) arranged concentrically around the stirrer shaft.
