Abstract
1510891 Capacitors G J ELDERBAUM 1 May 1975 18249/75 Heading H1M In a batch method of manufacturing ceramic capacitors, a conductive pattern is provided on the two opposite surfaces of a green ceramic sheet 15 so as to provide a plurality of aligned opposed capacitor electrodes 16, 17, further green ceramic sheets 11, 12 being laminated to the opposite surfaces of sheet 15. The laminate may be scored along mutually orthogonal lines between the individual capacitors, fired and broken along the score lines. Sheets 11, 12 may have a regular pattern of apertures 13, 14 whereby the electrodes are exposed in the laminate, through which apertures nailhead leads 20, 21 may be connected to the electrodes. In a modification (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) the inwardly facing surfaces of the outer green sheets have the electrode pattern applied thereto, each electrode surrounding a through aperture, and the middle green sheet has a conductive pattern applied to its two opposite surfaces comprising individual conductor portions each just larger than and in registry with the apertures. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 7) the individual electrodes 45, 46 each have a lead connection portion 47, 48 extending in opposite directions on opposite sides, to an extent that an edge is exposed on opposite side faces of the individual capacitors, which faces are provided with contact layers on known fashion. Where the middle sheet is too thin for handling, the conductor pattern to be applied to one side may first be deposited on a substrate provided with a release agent and the sheet slip-cast on top. The conductor pattern may then be applied to the exposed surface of the sheet followed by one of the outer sheets before peeling off from the substrate. Alternatively a conductor pattern may be applied to one surface of each of two sheets which are then assembled back-to-back. The fired assembly may be broken up so as to provide groups of capacitors which may be series and/or parallel connected, and the eventual units may be encapsulated.
