Abstract

1510761 Chlorine recovery process TIOXIDE GROUP Ltd 18 March 1977 [10 April 1976] 14725/76 Addition to 1274710 Heading C1A In a modification of the process of the parent patent for the recovery of chlorine from chlorinecontaining gas mixtures by contacting the gas with liquid titanium tetrachloride, the chorine-containing gas contains an amount of chlorine in the range 60 to 70% by volume, is at a temperature in the range 30 to 100‹C, and is compressed to a pressure in the range atmospheric to 30 psig, prior to contacting the chlorine-containing gas with liquid titanium tetrachloride at 60‹C, increasing the temperature to at least 145‹C to release chlorine, and recycling the titanium tetrachloride after heat exchange with the chlorine laden titanium tetrachloride. Preferably the chlorine-containing gas is at a temperature of 50 to 100‹C, especially 35 to 45‹C, and is compressed to 10 to 30 psig, especially 12 to 18 psig.
