Abstract

1510385 Multichannel sound systems J MOSELY 27 Oct 1975 [16 Dec 1974] 44166/75 Heading H4R In a system in which a plurality of directional sound signals are recorded for reproduction by a corresponding plurality of loudspeakers, at least a sound signal corresponding to a centre front (CF) location of a recording/listening area is recorded separately from the remaining sound signals which include signals corresponding to LF, RF, LB, RB positions of the recording/listening area. The application is to surround sound arrangements for cinemas and the recording medium is a number of magnetic or optical tracks adjacent the picture frames on a film. In a first embodiment, signals LF, RF, LB and RB are encoded into two composite signals LT, RT using any known quadraphonic encoding technique and are recorded together with the CF signal on respective ones of three magnetic tracks on a film (Fig. 2, not shown). Fig. 4 shows how six recording channels can be utilized for a ten channel system with the CF and CB signals being recorded on two of the tracks. The four other front channels are encoded into two channel form as are the two other back signals and the two side signals. Known quadraphonic encoders and decoders may be employed.
