PURPOSE:To obtain a stable reproduced data signal by adding a channel mode signal during multichannel PCM recording at each interval of time which has a certain relation with intervals of samples of a data signal of a prescribed channel. CONSTITUTION:A data signal and a channel mode signal are supplied to a multiplexer 2, and they are coded and then supplied through a parallel-series converter 3 and a DA converter 4 to a recorder 5 to be recorded on a tape. In this case, if a channel mode signal CHMODE is added together with a synchronizing signal S to every sample SMP consiting of data signals DATA of eight channels, the CHMODE is added together with the synchronizing signal S to every other SM of signals DATA of four channels. During reproduction, the signal DATA and CHMODE are stored in storage devices 13 and 14 separately, and the signal DATA is reproduced stably through a demultiplexer 15 according to the setting of the CHMODE.
