Abstract

1510187 Lasers MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 24 Oct 1975 [24 Oct 1974] 43867/75 Addition to 1443974 Heading H1C In a laser as described in the parent Specification in which a gas comprising a lasing constituent and a seed gas is pumped by the combination of a photoionizing light source and an electrical discharge, the seed gas comprises an amine having the structure:- where R1, R2 and R3 represent alkyl groups and in which R2 and R3 may together form a cycloalkyl group. The seed gas has an ionization potential below that of the lasing constituent, and its photoionization may involve either a single step or a multiple step process. The gas may be a CO2-N2-Ne mixture, with a seed gas consisting of tripropylamine, tripentylamine, tributylamine, triethylamine or trimethylamine for single step operation. For multiple step operation the seed gas may be triethylamine or trimethylamine. The use of tri-n-propyl amine, tributylamine and tripentylamine in a multiple step photoionization process as disclosed in the parent Specification is disclaimed.
