Abstract
1509823 Controlling light XONICS Inc 16 Feb 1976 06020/76 Heading G2F [Also in Division H1] A device which provides an optical output corresponding to an incident x-ray image includes a chamber 17 having an upper wall electrode 15 and filled with an x-ray absorbing, electrically insulating, liquid having atoms of an atomic number of at least 17, the charge image resulting from ionization of the liquid being transferred through a matrix of pins 16 in a glass plate which forms the lower wall of the chamber, to modulate a liquid crystal 20 contained between the glass plate and a transparent electrode 19. The liquid crystal material may be of either dynamic scattering or of field effect type. In the former case, the polarity of the potential difference across the chamber 17 is preferably reversed between successive exposures, giving alternate electron and positive ion images at the matrix, in order to increase the useful life of the liquid crystal. To improve the optical image, in the former case the lower ends of the metal pins 16 may be polished to enhance their reflectivity, and in the latter case the insulating layer which it is necessary to interpose between the pin matrix and the liquid crystal material may be in the form of a dielectric mirror; a lamp 34 may also be directed at the window. Reference is made to the use of a storage liquid crystal material, to permit preservation of an image until erased by the application of A.C. The pin matrix glass plate may be x-ray absorbing, to constitute an x-ray shield for the liquid crystal material.
