Abstract
1509538 IC engines with rotation derived from pistons acting on a cam surface R F BAILEY 20 May 1975 [10 Oct 1974] 43848/74 Heading F1B An engine has a housing 10, (e.g. of alloy with cast iron end-plates, or of cast iron) with a cylinder block 16 (e.g. of alloy with steel cylinder liners) mounted therein, and a central drive shaft 36 extending between bearings 58, 60 in opposed end walls 12, 14. At end-wall 14 there is provided an annular cam surface 30 having at least two areas distant from the end-plate 14 and at least two areas closer to the end-plate 14. Bores 18, parallel to the drive shaft 36 are formed in the cylinder block 16 to contain pistons 32, 34, each provided with a cam follower surface (68) engaging cam surface 30. At the other end-wall 12 there are located inlet (72, 74) and exhaust (76, 78) ports and a sparking plug (80) (all not shown). The cylinder block 16 rotates with the shaft 36. In order to maintain the cam follower end (68) against the cam surface 30, the piston and cylinder bores are stepped and a quantity of pressurized gas is trapped at the piston shoulder. A duct (86 not shown) may lead from the combustion chamber at the top (leftward) end of each piston to the shoulder to direct exhaust gases to the shoulder and replenish leaked gases. Cooling. Oil or water is circulated through a bore 38 in driving shaft 36, in which an inlet tube 48 is coaxially arranged about an outlet tube 46, and through bores 40, 44 to cavities in the cylinder block 16. Lubrication. Oil is pressurized by a pump 62 operated by the shaft 36 to lubricate the bearings 58 60 and the cam surface 30. Oil reservoirs 66, 66 are formed beneath the cam surface 30 and are connected to the pump 62 by bores 64 and to the cam surface 30 by small bores. Ignition starting. Spark impulses may be derived from a H.T. coil 52 coacting with magnetic slugs 56 arranged peripherally of the cylinder block 16. The engine may be started electrically or manually, or a port with a quick release connection (not shown) can be provided for introducing compressed air into the cylinders.
