Abstract

1509351 Viscous couplings USUI INTERNATIONAL INDUSTRY Ltd 15 Jan 1976 [30 Jan 1975] 01653/76 Heading F2W [Also in Division G1] A viscous coupling driving an engine cooling fan 27 is controlled in accordance with temperature by a bimetallic element 4, in the form of a disc, which moves with a snap action between convex and concave positions, the bimetallic element 4 being acted upon by a spring to reduce the difference between the temperature required to move the element in one direction and that required to move it back. Two springs, 9 1 and 9 2 , are shown in Fig. 7 but either of these may be omitted (Figs. 1 and 5, not shown). A valve member 13 is moved by the bimetallic element by way of a rod 7 to cover or uncover outlet ports 11 of the coupling to control the flow from a chamber 12 through the working chamber 18, the fluid entering through restricted inlets 15. Instead of the valve member 13 shown, a pivoted member may be provided (Fig. 5, not shown).
