1508988 Ticket issuing and checking system LONDON TRANSPORT EXECUTIVE 23 May 1975 [21 June 1974] 27677/74 Heading G4T A ticket issuing and checking system (Fig. 1) comprises ticket issuing means 2 for magnetically encoding data on a coated surface of the ticket, an entry gate P comprising a ticket sensing, transporting and printing mechanism (Fig. 2) having a ticket input slot A, a transporting mechanism 8, a reading head F, erase head K, rewrite head L, and re-recording head M past which the ticket passes, a slot G through which non-acceptable tickets may be ejected by deflection means H, means for sensing the orientation and position of the ticket and producing signals indicative thereof, printing means Q and a slot R through which acceptable tickets issue, whereby an acceptable ticket proceeds continuously from the ticket input slot A to the printing means Q irrespective of which end of the ticket is presented to the slot A and irrespective of whether or not the coated surface of the ticket is uppermost. The gate P includes logic circuitry 9, 10 a master dater 13 and retractable arms or paddles or a turnstile which are operated when an acceptable ticket is presented. An exit gate P 1 comprises a reading head 17, electronic circuitry 14, 15, a master dater unit 13a, and bin 16 for receiving tickets retained by the gate. Acceptable tickets presented at the gate P 1 cause the exit gate to open and acceptable season tickets are returned to the commuter.
