Abstract
1508254 Varistor MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 20 Aug 1976 34908/76 Heading C1J [Also in Division H1] A varistor comprises a polycrystalline high resistance layer 2 including at least zinc silicate and/or zinc antimonate formed on a sintered body 1 consisting mainly of zinc oxide and itself having non-linear voltage-dependent properties, and a non-crystalline insulating layer 3 formed on the polycrystalline layer 1. A mixture containing silicon and antimony oxides, carbonates or hydroxides is applied to the zinc oxide-containing body 1 which is fired to sinter the body I and to form the compounds of the layer 2. A paste containing glass frit is applied on the layer 2 and baked to form the insulating layer 3. Various specified metal oxides may be included in the zinc-oxide containing body I and the polycrystalline high resistance layer 2 e.g. Bi 2 O 3 , CoO, MnO and Sb 2 O 3 . The layer 3 protects the varistor from contamination by moisture or chemically active atmospheres.
