Abstract

1507732 Preparing photo-receptors XEROX CORP 8 May 1975 [10 June 1974] 19375/75 Heading C7F [Also in Division G2] A flexible photo-receptor is prepared by bombarding a metal surface of a flexible substrate with positive ions of a first D.C. glow discharge comprising positive ions of at least one non metallic gas in the presence of oxygen, said metal surface during said bombarding being a cathode of a first D.C. glow discharge system providing said first discharge, such that said metal is thereby oxidized and exposing said oxidized surface to a vapour cloud subjected to said first D.C. glow discharge and/or to a second D.C. glow discharge, said surface during said exposing being a cathode of the discharge system, such that said exposing deposits photo-conductive material on to said oxidized surface. The substrate may be a foil of Cu, steel, brass, Al, Zn or Ni, or a polymer coated with one of these; the gas may be air, Ar/O 2 , Ar/air, Ar/CO 2 or N 2 /O 2 , at least 1% by volume of O 2 being present; the gas pressure may be up to 30Á Hg, and a D.C. voltage of 1500-3500 V is used, at current 0À05-0À5 ma/cm<SP>2</SP> to produce a 10-200Š oxide layer whilst heating the substrate to 55-60‹C. For the deposition step, a source of Se, which may be alloyed with Te, Ge, As, Sb, Bi and/or Cl, Br or I is heated by resistance heating or electron- or ionbeam to give a vapour cloud, a stainless steel boat containing the source being used as anode. Oxidation and deposition may be sequential or may overlap.
