Abstract

1506841 Wired broadcasting COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS Ltd 10 March 1975 [6 March 1974] 10146/74 Heading H4R In a wired braodcasting system a trunk cable (I) Fig. 1 (not shown) has a plurality of pairs of wires on which programme signals are made available. Stem cables (3) are connected to the trunk cable, preferably by repeaters (2), and also have a plurality of pairs of wires carrying respective programme signals. A number of exchanges (4) are arranged on each stem cable, each feeding a number of subscribers via respective subscriber cables (5), the exchanges having switching to interconnect a subscribers cable to a selected pair of wires in the stem cable in accordance with the setting of a selector in the subscribers unit. As described the subscribers selector is a variable resistance device connected across the subscribers line and adjustable in steps to select the required programme. At the exchange, Fig. 2, which is the subject of divisional application no. 36424/77, a voltage source 13 is connected in series with resistor 12 across each subscribers line 20, via rf chokes 21. The potential across the respective resistors 12, corresponding to each subscribers line, depends on the respective subscribers selection and these voltages are sampled successively by multiplexer 8 under the control of clock 6 and binary converter 7, and the samples are fed to an a to d converter 9 to provide binary codes corresponding to the programme selected. Each binary code, in a converter 10, enables one of the twelve output lines of drive unit 11, corresponding to the subscribers selection. Each subscriber has a set of twelve gates 14 which are enabled, by 15, at the same time as the subscribers selection appears at the output of drive unit 11 so that the appropriate one of the gates 14 is opened to cause closing of one of the switches 16 to connect the one of lines 17, carrying the selected programme to the subscribers line. The time constant of the gate 14, and/or the switch 16 is such as to hold between successive appearances of the enabling signal on unit 15. It is suggested that the selection signal may be an A.C. or HF signal with selection indicated by frequency changes, or frequency, amplitude, or phase, modulation, or pulse position, pulse frequency, or pulse amplitude, modulation.
