Abstract

1506290 Tractor-trailer braking systems FIAT SpA 3 June 1975 [14 June 1974 28 Feb 1975] 23955/75 Heading F2F A tractor-trailer braking system includes a relay valve 100 having a control port 102 to which air is supplied from a reservoir 14 via a distributer 16. Air from reservoir 14 also passes through ports 104, 106 to trailer brake valve 20 maintaining air pressure in the trailer reservoir 18 and the relay valve 100 closes the connection between the ports 104, 106 in the event of failure in the tractor circuit, e.g. at point A. Pressure on pedal 15 causes movement of pistons 116, 122 towards piston 180 to close communication between chambers 130, 132 when a sealing ring 190 engages a valve seat 143 and to then displace piston 180 to open communication between chambers 168 and 132 and port 108 so that air from reservoir 14 causes conventional operation of valve 20 to apply the trailer brakes. If, however, there is a failure, for example at point A of conduit 38, there is no counter-pressure in chamber 132 and sudden axial displacement of piston 180 brings an annular seal 186 into abutment with seat 172 to isolate reservoir 14 both from the point of failure and from relay valve 100, air in the automatic circuit being discharged to atmosphere through conduit 36, chamber 168, chamber 132 and the point of failure and the consequent pressure drop causing valve 20 to initiate braking of the trailer. A visual pressure loss indicator 50 warns the vehicle driver.
