Abstract

1506242 Heat recoverable plastics tube COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 17 Sept 1976 [10 Oct 1975] 41601/75 Heading F2P [Also in Divisions B5 and H2] A device for closing sleeves or joining two articles, comprises a first component having a plurality of protrusions, and a second component having a plurality of recesses adapted to interlock and engage with the protrusions. The protrusions and/or the recesses are formed of a heat recoverable polymeric material and dimensioned such that when the recesses are in a heat unstable condition a loose interlocking is achieved which is tightened upon heat recovery. As described, the device is particularly useful for joining a heat-shrunk split sleeve, which may be bifurcated (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown), used to cover the joint of a cable or pipe to provide a water resistant covering. The components may be joined to the sleeve by solvent cement welding, fusion welding or rod welding, or may be an integral part of the sleeve. Each component comprises preferably a plurality of dove-tail tongues and grooves and the resulting joint may be half lapped. The polymeric material may be a plasticized grade of PVC, a PVC copolymer, a blend of PVC homo or co-polymer with one or more other polymeric materials, low or high density thermoplastic polythene, polypropylene, or a polyamide. The mating surfaces of the components may be coated with a solvent cement, a hot melt adhesive or a rubber based adhesive, and the inner surface of the components and the sleeve may be coated with a sealant or mastic to prevent water ingress.
