Abstract

1505847 Metal vapour lamps GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 10 April 1975 [28 May 1974] 14799/75 Heading H1D To aid starting of a metal vapour lamp with arc tube containing metal and inert gas an external metal member connected to one elec. trode and capacitatively coupled to the other lies against the tube wall when cold; it is deformed by heat to move away from the wall after starting. In a 150 W high pressure Na vapour lamp, with alumina arc tube 9 con. taining Ne + 1 %Ar starting gas together with Na plus possibly Hg in filling tube 12 reservoir when the lamp is to run base down, the remote electrode 15 and cap 11 are connected to the base terminal 5 by side rod 19. Bimetal U- shaped strip 23 is spot welded 24-25 to rod 19 and has curved ends 26-27 to wrap around tube 9 (see Fig. 2a). On heating, the strip opens as in Fig. 3a, reducing light obscuration, overheating of the strip, chemical reaction with the tube 9 and thermal etching of the tube by reflected heat. For wider movement, possibly with a thicker strip, the form of Fig. 4 is preferable. The strip reduces the starting voltage from 300 to 180. Other geometries, e.g. the arms swinging in an axial plane, are permitted.
