Abstract

1505829 Chopper amplifier COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS Ltd 22 July 1975 [3 May 1974] 19661/74 Heading H3D [Also in Division G3] To ensure that the averaged output from a circuit applying pulse width modulation to a D.C. supply V L controlled by an input signal Vi does not vary with change in D.C. supply level, the modulator switch 5 changes its output from V L to zero at the change in sign of the difference between Vi and a ramp signal 2, the gradient of which is proportional to the D.C. level V L . The ramp generator 1 may be a periodically-switched RC circuit, only the linear lower part of the wave form being used (Fig. 3, not shown) or a Miller integrator (Fig. 2, not shown). Comparator 3 causes transistor 5 to switch off when the ramp voltage exceeds Vi: the averaged output across load 9 from LC circuit 7, 8 with flywheel diode 6 then being independent of V L , formed as the mean of short tall pulses or wide low ones according to the variation of V L .
