Abstract

1,257,629. Pulse modulation circuits. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 20 March, 1969 [20 Feb., 1968], No. 8318/68. Heading H4L. [Also in Division G3] In a pulse width modulator, the input signal V IN provides a voltage VE via a potentiometer R1 which is combined with a saw-tooth wave V S and supplied to one input Y of a transistorized differential amplifier DA, the other input Z being a reference voltage V R derived through a Zener diode ZD. The Zener diode clamps the voltage V R to the desired value and prevents changes due to temperature variation. When the sum of V S and V E is greater than V R the amplifier provides a constant amplitude output X but the duration of the output signal depends upon the difference between V S plus V E and V R . The input V IN may be inversely dependent upon the terminal voltage of a generator and the duration modulated pulses X used to excite the field of the generator so that the terminal voltage is maintained constant with varying load.
