Abstract

1505540 Linear-measuring instruments; dividing engines SOC GENEVOISE D'INSTRUMENTS DE PHYSIQUE 9 April 1975 [10 April 1974] 14577/75 Headings G1M and G1X [ Also in Divisions G2 and G3] A scale for a linear-measuring instrument is engraved with a plurality of parallel grooves 2 each of which can be detected, in visible light, only by its diffraction image, e.g using a photoelectric microscope, each groove being for example 1 Ám wide and ¢ Ám deep. As shown a number of grooves 2 may be grouped together to form a division line or indicium 1 which appears non- reflecting on a reflecting background. Divisions of the scale may be formed by a single groove 2 Fig. 3 (not shown), a continuous succession of grooves, Fig. 2 (not shown), groups of grooves separated by plain surface portions of equal width Fig. 4 (not shown), or plain surface portions between relatively wide groups of grooves, Fig. 5 (not shown). To engrave the scale 3 it is placed on a table 2 moved by a lead screw 4 driven by a motor. The table 2 carries one mirror 7 of a conventional interferometer 7-11 whose output is processed by means including a programmed device 16 to cause a laser 17, e.g. a high power ruby laser, to flash at desired times. An astigmatic optical system 19-21 brings the laser light to a bar-shaped focus to engrave a groove 2 in the scale 3.
