1505319 Television INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 30 June 1976 [3 July 1975] 27250/76 Addition to 1481874 Heading H4F The television system of the parent Specification in which additional sound signals in digital form are transmitted during extended back porch periods after the colour bursts with a start pulse preceding the first digital pulse thereof, is modified so that for monochrome transmission a reference signal of burst frequency is transmitted instead of each burst. At the receiver this reference signal is used to decode the additional sound signals during monochrome transmission and the difference between the reference signal and the burst signal is detected and used to switch off the chrominance channel in the receiver to thereby permit troublefree monochrome reception. For PAL colour signals the effect of the absence of the swinging colour burst frequency component of half line frequency is to switch off the chrominance channel.
