Abstract

1505053 Cutting apparatus DOCUTRONIX Inc 22 April 1976 [13 Aug 1975] 16323/76 Heading B4B A machine for opening an envelope 15 having two panels (17, 19) Fig. 2 (not shown), comprises means 81, 57, 63, 83 for feeding the envelope past a cutter assembly 13 for severing the envelope along one edge thereof, the cutter assembly including a rotatable cutter wheel 55 having a cutting edge adapted to co-operate with a groove 79 in an anvil wheel 61, the groove having a shape corresponding to that of the cutting wheel edge, and means 75 arranged to maintain a gap between the cutting edge and the groove such that the cutting edge only severs through one of the panels of the envelope adjacent the edge thereof. The cutter wheel 55 is rotatably mounted in a bracket 49 pivotably mounted relative to a stationary bracket 61 on which the anvil wheel is rotatably mounted; the wheels are rotated by a motor 65 via gears 67 and respective spindles 53, 59. Resilient feed rollers 57, 63 are mounted on the spindles. The anvil wheel is urged towards the cutter wheel by a spring 73, Fig. 4, the gap between the cutting edge and groove being determined by an adjusting screw 75.
