Abstract

1504865 Hammers JACOBS MFG CO Ltd 14 May 1975 [21 May 1974] 22648/74 Heading B4C A hammer 10 is provided with replaceable inserts 20 having different materials 34 therein the inserts being held in place by release mechanism 36, the hammer handle being hollow to store inserts when not in use. As shown in Fig. 1, the insert 20 has a forked tang and is held in place by a spring-loaded pin 38 a widened section 46 of which locks in a counterbore in the tang. The hammer head is fixed to the shaft by a rivet 24 and plastics members 21, 22. A spring-urged member 56 holds spare inserts inside the hammer shaft. Alternative locking means for the insert include an apertured plate normally offset by spring means from the bore into which the tang of the insert member and which engages a groove in the insert member. Alternatively a screw-on cap may be provided to retain a flange on the insert. The hammer head may be held on by spreading the hammer shaft with a tapered plug. Square section apertures may be provided also to locate sockets on the hammer head and in one embodiment the handle of the hammer remote from the head may be provided with means for locating a screw-driver blade.
